According to police documents, Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, popularly known as NBA YoungBoy, has been accused of being a part of a large-scale prescription fraud ring in Cache County. Gaulden was arrested by the Cache County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, April 16, on charges of a pattern of unlawful activity.

He is facing multiple charges, including possession of a dangerous weapon and drug-related misdemeanors. The charges against him also include 20 third-degree felony charges of identity fraud, 20 third-degree felony charges of forgery, and a second-degree felony charge of a pattern of unlawful activity. Gaulden and several associates allegedly called in prescriptions for Promethazine with Codeine at pharmacies throughout Cache County, a drug that is heavily abused. In September 2023, Gaulden allegedly posed as a physician in the Provo area and provided actual identification for the physician while calling a Hyrum pharmacy, pretending to be a 74-year-old woman.

However, the pharmacist noticed that the number that was called did not match the number of the clinic, and upon calling the doctor, he confirmed that he did not call in the prescription, saying that the same thing had happened several times that day.

The same day, police were alerted to another fraudulent prescription call at another pharmacy in Smithfield. The pharmacy reportedly found the call to be suspicious and later contacted law enforcement after confirming the fake prescription with the Provo-based doctor. Police were able to apprehend two women who they say were driving a Tahoe registered to Gaulden.

The women reportedly told police they were going to pick up the prescription for a “friend” but would not give a name. The following day, a person claiming to be Gaulden’s “business manager” called Cache County Sheriff’s to get the Tahoe out of impound. During that call, the deputy was able to speak to Gaulden directly. The deputy reported he suspected Gaulden put him on mute several times during the conversation though at one time, he reported hearing a request to ask about “the prescription they picked up.”

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office requested and executed a search warrant on Gaulden’s multi-million dollar home in an unincorporated area of Weber County. Investigators reportedly found several prescription bottles in the mansion including those with the fraudulent names used. A gun was also found in the in an unsecured location of the the master bedroom closet.

Gaulden reportedly denied knowing anything about the fraudulent prescriptions but said a doctor in Roy had prescribed him Promethazine. He further claimed the gun belonged to his wife and that he never handled it, later admitting to picking it up and moving it at one point.

“Kentrell was questioned further, however, he continued to be deceptive and deny knowledge of any illegally possessed prescriptions or prescription fraud schemes and no further information was received during the interview,” a Cache County Sheriff’s Office deputy wrote in his report.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office said Gaulden is currently on federal house arrest for a 2020 case in his home state of Louisiana. He has had an extensive criminal history, according to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, having been previously convicted for violent crimes including aggravated assault and simple battery.

Gaulden was moved to Utah to serve his pre-trial federal house arrest as his lawyers argued moving to Utah would “keep YoungBoy out of trouble.”

He was booked into the Cache County Jail and denied bail.
